A Membership Note

When you visit Salem on a Sunday morning, we hope that you are made to feel welcome.  We really love to have people join our church and, while we would love to sign you up before you go out the door, we also realize that our visitors who are looking for a church need time and space to decide.  That said, we may assume that if you return on a regular basis you feel at home at Salem and may be interested in becoming a member. Because of the high concentration of Lutherans who live in our area, we find that most of our visitors who are "church shopping" have a Lutheran background or some connection.  For this reason, we don't offer "new member classes," but instead, simply prefer that you continue to come to worship and participate in the life of our congregation until our once or twice annual "New Member Sundays".

Those who wish to join Salem from another ELCA (Evangelical Lutheran Church in America) congregation where they used to live do so by having membership transferred.  People joining from non-ELCA Lutheran or other Christian congregations become members of the ELCA by joining Salem.  That means, if you are Catholic or Methodist or Presbyterian or some other Christian denomination, there is no process to "convert" you to Lutheranism.  We simply recognize you as a fellow Christian who is joining the Salem Lutheran Church family, and your former church membership is part of your journey as a follower of Jesus. If you are new to the Lutheran Church or the Christian faith and you would like to become a member of Salem, you are very welcome! The pastor can give you private instruction in order to help you better understand the Lutheran tradition within Christianity and so that you can fully participate in the life of our congregation.

Anyone who is baptized at Salem (child or adult), becomes a member of Salem through baptism. For more information about baptism at Salem, please visit the Salem Baptism page.
